The Ultra-Mill Vee style milling cutter is designed to accommodate coarse, medium and fine pitch cutting applications using a common bodystyle, adapting to different applications by changing cartridge styles. Cartridge styles are available to accept screw-in carbide inserts for machining ferrous metals, or brazed PCD or TFd (thick-film diamond) inserts for non-ferrous materials.
Thus, one Ultra-Mill cutter body provides you the luxury of machining a wide range of workpiece materials simply by installing different cartridges.
The patented Vee style pocket design used in the Ultra-Mill body allows almost twice as many standard cartridges to be incorporated in a given body size. This allows running at faster speeds and feeds for any size of cutter body. In addition, the ability to incorporate more cutters is utilized in our two-phase cutter that roughs and finishes in one pass while still obtaining an adequate feed rate per tooth.

Left-hand or right-hand cutting
The Ultra-Mill standard pockets are symmetrical, so the same cutter body can be used to cut left hand or right hand simply by changing cartridges. The cutting forces are still directed toward the cutter body, whichever way the cutter is running.

Flexibility in choice of cutters
The Vee style cartridge allows the use of screw-on indexable carbide inserts as well as brazed PCD and TFd (thick-film diamond) cartridges. Diamond tipped and diamond-coated inserts are also available.
The cutting edge is in line with the Vee of the cartridge. All cutting geometries are obtained in the cartridge. For example, positive and negative geometries an be achieved by changing cartridges. This means if your production parts requirements change you only have to buy new cartridges to fill your needs. The Ultra-Mill cutter body accepts all Ultra-style cartridges with the same series number.

Chip control
Evacuation of chips is a major problem in high speed machining. If chip evacuation is insufficient, chips load up around the inserts and are recut or rub the part surface, causing premature insert or cartridge wear and breakage as well as surface finish problems. Our Vee style cutter presents no restrictions to chip evacuation.. In fact, chip evacuation is as unrestricted as if it were a turning style tool.

Adjustable set height
The Ultra-Mill cutter body has the capability to adjust the Set Height. This is critical in machining with PCD to achieve and maintain the desired surface finish and tool life. A Set Height adjustment of .0002" helps maintain correct chip load and wear conditions on cutting edges.

Coolant
Through-the-spindle coolant is supplied through an opening on the face of the cutter. The coolant screw replaces the arbor screw on shell mill style adapters. Face mount cutters have a coolant plate which mounts on the face of the cutter, with access holes to the cutter mounting screws. Using through-the-spindle coolant assures that the coolant is applied to the cutting edges of the tool, and helps wash chips out of the way.

Aluminum or steel body construction
An aluminum cutter body with PCD cartridges is recommended for machining all non-ferrous materials, e.g. aluminum, copper, bronze, brass, plastic, wood, etc. A steel body with carbide inserts is recommended for machining steel, stainless, and all ferrous materials.

5 year warranty
The Ultra-Mill cutter body has a 5-year warranty against normal wear. If the body wears out or fails in any way we will replace it at no cost, unless the failure is caused by abuse or a machine wreck (We will inspect failed cutters.) Note that dirty or contaminated coolant can be a cause of premature wear and will not be covered under warranty.

Capabilities
Set height: adjustable, for improved finishes.
Face coolant: all cutters will accept through-the-spindle coolant using either a special shower screw, or a coolant plate for larger sizes. No cutter body modification is required. The coolant screw delivers coolant across the cutter edge and prevents recutting chips.

Cutter styles and sizes
Sizes: standard sizes range from 2-1/2" diameter with 6 pockets to 10" diameter with 30 pockets.
Mounting: styles range from integral and weldon shank to standard facemill mounting.
Body construction: aluminum bodies are offered for cutting non-ferrous materials and cast iron. Steel bodies are offered for all other applications.
Custom cutter bodies: we will quote on specials of any size and style of mounting.
